Shadow Song, 1988
Mixed media installation

The silk banners of Shadow Song depict the artist’s silhouette stretched across various landscapes. The works are based on photographs in which Saar captured her shadow during numerous trips across the United States in the 1980s, as she traveled for exhibitions, lectures, and teaching. “The installations are autobiographical as I am participating yet I am elsewhere,” says Saar. The banners commemorate travels to Skowhegan, Maine, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a visit to her family in Pasadena, and Saar’s life in Southern California. Gently moving with the wind, the shadows evoke a contemplative atmosphere and subtle presence.
